This month, a Macaroni Kid reader asked me, “What are your thoughts on soy milk?  My son had a milk allergy and is not interested in drinking milk now.  He will only drink soy milk.” To answer this question, I’d like to compare the basic nutrients in soy milk and cow’s milk and consider the common questions and concerns people have about soy.

"Bam!" "Ka-Pow!" "Bonk!" – as they say in comic books. While that's not really what the superheroes of The Avengers have to say (they are much more articulate), their actions are fairly true to their comic book roots. Saturday, May 19 through Sunday, May 20 - Corn-Grinding Tour

Relive history the 3rd weekend of each month and experience the traditional way corn was ground into meal and wheat into flour, using waterpower, simple machines & millstones. Shell corn, see the mill in operation, and hear how the "gristmill" works from costumed interpreters.  In addition to these milling demos, the mill is open for guided tours every weekend starting in the beginning of March.  Free demonstrations of other historic trades and crafts are also available each month in the mill yard.

Monday, June 18 - NC Museum of Natural Sciences: Amazing Arthropods

Meet some of nature's most colorful, bazaar and numerous life forms, the Arthropods! Learn how to identify insects, spiders and their relatives. Learn how they live, what they do and their importance to us on a daily basis. Whether you are a seasoned "bug-addict", "avid-collector", "trained entomologist" or "backyard naturalist", this workshop is for you! All activities are designed to entertain anyone with an interest in arthropods. Although there will be use of technical terms, everything will be explained to ensure the understanding and educational needs of all who attend. The Leader: Bill Reynolds, Curator of the Arthropod Zoo & Martha Flanagan, Coordinator of the Living Conservatory.

Crafts (basketry, candles, ceramics, clothing, drawings fabric, art, glass, furniture), Music (Cloggers, Gospel, Blues, Bluegrass, Country, Fiddlers, Guitarists, Banjos, local & well-know artisans), Food (BBQ, Traditional and International), Shopping, Face Painting, Hands-on Crafts, Craft Demonstrations, Photo Museum Exhibits, Bring your blanks & lawn chairs.  The Festival is "Trash-Free" Environment.  Products handed to you will e either recyclable or compostable.  No little packets of catsup, wood stirrer instead of plastic.  Condiments are usually served in bulk containers - recyclable, paper plates - not wax.

This craft/art project comes from my mom, Patty. She taught grade school until she retired a few years ago. One of her kids' favorite art projects was "Name Bugs." She made one with me when I was little and has made one with my daughter. I love the simplicity of the craft and how beautiful they all turn out.
